69 percent of websites don't sell

Written on the 12th of June 2009 by Trevor Mayhew

The content of most business websites is crap. It's poorly written, boring drivel that tells the reader nothing, and fails to sell.

Now I accept that many business owners have poor writing skills. I also accept that many of you are time challenged.

But what I can't accept is that business owners don't have the commonsense to pay someone to write their website copy for them.

Now some of you might be saying 'Yeah I did, the company who built my website wrote my copy'. Well I have news for you, the person who built your website cannot write copy. Just as most copywriters can't build websites. Worst of all, the poorly written copy on your website is costing you money.

Every time a prospect clicks on your website, looks around and then hits the backspace button is a potential sale lost. All because having gone to the trouble of getting them their, your copy failed to 'sell' to them. It failed to persuade them to make a purchase, or contact your business.

So how much does each missed opportunity cost you? Think not only about the one off sale, but the repeat business and possible referrals that your business is missing out on. How much would it have cost you to have a skilled copywriter create some compelling copy for you? Copy that would have dramatically increased your chances of selling to the bulk of lost leads that have come to your site and then left again.

Many people find it difficult to write effective sales copy at the best of times, but writing effective online copy is harder again. This is because website copy serves two masters; it must 'sell' to consumers, whilst appealing to search engines.

To write effective copy from a search engine point of view, your copy must be rich in relevant keywords and phrases. With this in mind it is possible to write copy that is hugely effective from an SEO point of view, that will help your website list higher in the search engine rankings. However, the type of copy that works well for SEO is almost always useless from a sales point of view.

The trick is to write copy for people, with enough keywords in the right places to appeal to the search engines. There is a real art to this style of writing, and it's an art that clearly is not understood by the bulk of people who write copy for business websites.

So here's what I want you to do - log onto your website and read the copy on your home page. Does the copy draw you in? Does it make you want to keep reading? Would it truly inspire you to pick up the phone and call? Or to make a purchase online?

The chances are the real answer to that question is no, and because of that, you are losing money.

It is a waste of money to have a website built only to have poor content drive potential customers away. The real investment you should be making is in having a professional copywriter create powerful sales copy for your website.

So if you're sick of losing money, and want to turn your website into a profit generating machine, then it's time to pick up the phone and give us a call. Right now, not in a couple of days. The time to start growing your business online is NOW.
